Napoli is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire American international midfielder Yunus Musah from AC Milan in a deal valued at approximately $25 million. Musah, who will turn 23 later this year, joined AC Milan from Valencia in the summer of 2023 alongside his U.S. teammate Christian Pulisic. However, he has not achieved the same level of impact as the American forward during his tenure.
According to reports, Napoli is now prepared to offer Musah a contract, potentially seeing him join the squad under the guidance of new coach Antonio Conte this summer. This move is viewed as potentially ideal for both the player and the United States men`s national team, who hope to see Musah in his best form ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Musah`s two-year spell at AC Milan was marked by inconsistency across 80 appearances in all competitions. His challenges were compounded by significant instability off the field, including three different managerial changes during his time at the club, which likely impacted his ability to settle and thrive.
Upon his arrival in Serie A, then-AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli utilized Musah for his versatility across the midfield. However, Pioli departed after one season, replaced by Paulo Fonseca. When results under Fonseca did not meet expectations, Sergio Conceicao was reportedly appointed later. This period saw the team finish the 2024-25 season in 8th place, missing out on all European competitions for the following campaign.
Throughout his time at AC Milan, Musah was deployed in various midfield roles – including central midfield, right-central midfield, and occasionally even pushed out as an attacking winger or right back. While his adaptability allowed him to feature in 80 games, it seemingly prevented him from establishing a consistent role and becoming an undisputed key player for the team.
This is where the proposed move to Napoli and working under Antonio Conte could be transformative for Musah`s career. He requires a coach who can demonstrate trust and provide him with a specific role in midfield, along with the consistent game time necessary to develop into a regular starter.
