WTA Statement on PTPA Legal Action

Sports News

“The PTPA’s action is regrettable and misguided, and we will defend our position vigorously.”

“The WTA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of women’s tennis, benefiting players, tournaments, and fans. WTA players are integral members, sharing governance with tournaments and possessing significant influence within the WTA. Player input, through elected representatives on the Board, is included in every WTA Board decision. Athletes gain substantial financial rewards and advantages from WTA participation.”

“This governance model, supported by generations of athletes, has enabled the WTA to achieve considerable progress for players. Recent examples include a $400 million increase in player compensation, a defined path to equal pay at major WTA events, new investment for long-term growth, and the introduction of comprehensive maternity benefits for independent female athletes—a first in women’s sports.”

“The WTA is committed to the ongoing development of professional women’s tennis, always considering player perspectives. Contesting this baseless legal case will detract time and resources from our core mission, ultimately harming players and the sport.”
