The USWNT U-23 team has announced its roster for an upcoming training camp that will be held at the same time as the senior team`s April friendlies against Brazil. This announcement comes after Emma Hayes named her 24-player senior roster. Hayes has emphasized the importance of developing the U23 program.
In January, a `Futures Camp` was held to restart the U23 program, bringing together promising young players in Florida. Several participants from that camp have since been called up to the senior team for the SheBelieves Cup and the April friendlies against Brazil.
Lisa Cole, the lead scout for the WNT player pathway, will oversee the U23 camps, with Hayes and her staff observing training sessions. The U23 coaching staff includes Heather Dyche (University of New Mexico), Yolanda Thomas (Orlando Pride), and Louis Hunt (goalkeeper coach).
Cole explained that Hayes believes in providing more opportunities for young professional and college players within the national team environment to compete and develop together.
Having both camps at the same location allows both coaching staffs to evaluate players and for everyone to understand the demands of international level performance. This setup provides a valuable experience for both players and coaches.
The U23 roster includes professional players like Eva Gaetino (Paris Saint-Germain), Gisele Thompson (Angel City FC), and Savy King (Angel City FC) in defense. Forwards such as Reilyn Turner (Portland Thorns FC), Jameese Joseph (Chicago Stars FC), and Sarah Schupansky (Gotham FC) are also included, all of whom have recently started for their NWSL clubs.
