Unrest Follows PSG’s Historic Champions League Victory

Following Paris Saint-Germain`s historic 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in Munich, securing their first-ever Champions League trophy, what should have been a night of jubilant celebration in Paris tragically descended into chaos. The post-match events in the capital and across France resulted in two fatalities and hundreds of arrests as clashes erupted.

According to reports from the Ministry of the Interior, a total of 559 individuals were arrested nationwide. In Paris alone, 491 people were taken into custody, primarily on or near the Champs-Elysees avenue, where gatherings led to confrontations with law enforcement officers.

Tragically, the unrest included two reported deaths. In Paris, a man riding a scooter was struck and killed by a car. Separately, a 17-year-old tragically died from a stabbing during celebrations in the southwestern town of Dax, although the prosecutor`s office noted it was not yet confirmed if this violent incident was directly linked to the football festivities.

Journalists also observed police deploying water cannons near the Arc de Triomphe in an effort to disperse crowds. A police statement described those causing trouble on the Champs-Elysees as actively seeking conflict, repeatedly engaging with officers by throwing large fireworks and other objects. Further incidents included a car driving into fans in Grenoble, southeastern France, injuring four people from the same family, two of whom sustained serious injuries. The driver subsequently surrendered to police and is currently under arrest.

While the majority of PSG supporters celebrated peacefully, particularly in areas near the Parc des Princes stadium where 48,000 fans watched the match, clashes were reported near both the Champs-Elysees avenue and the stadium vicinity.
