Todoni Back on Top with WTA 125 Victory in Antalya

Sports News

Anca Todoni, seeded No. 6, secured her third WTA 125 title by defeating Leyre Romero Gormaz in the final of the Megasaray Hotels Open Antalya 1. She won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, in a match that lasted one hour and 26 minutes.

This win marks the 20-year-old Romanian`s third WTA 125 title in 2024 alone. She previously won in Bari in June and Santa Cruz in October, with all her titles at this level being on clay courts.

Todoni, who recently entered the Top 100, reaching No. 100 this week, has revitalized her 2025 season with this victory. After a strong start to the year in Australia, including her first WTA 500 main-draw win in Brisbane and qualifying for the Australian Open, she experienced a dip in form. She lost four out of five subsequent matches, failing to qualify in Linz, Cluj-Napoca, Merida, and Indian Wells.

Her Antalya campaign started with a tough first round where she lost the first set to Panna Udvardy. However, Todoni fought back to win that match and continued her resilience in the quarterfinals, overcoming No. 3 seed Arantxa Rus in three sets. In the final, Todoni`s powerful serve was a key factor, landing 67% of her first serves and winning 71% of those points. Her strong serve was complemented by aggressive and controlled play from the baseline.

Leyre Romero Gormaz, ranked No. 157, had an impressive run to her first WTA 125 final. The 22-year-old Spaniard defeated No. 8 seed Wei Sijia in the first round and navigated a challenging path through rising stars Ella Seidel and Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva. She then won a hard-fought semifinal match against Maja Chwalinska.

Clara Burel, formerly ranked No. 42, made her return to competition in Antalya after a three-month break. In her first tournament of the season, the French player defeated No. 7 seed Nuria Parrizas Diaz in the first round and reached the semifinals. Unfortunately, she had to retire in her semifinal match against Todoni due to a lower back injury.

The tournament saw early exits for the top two seeds. No. 1 seed Emiliana Arango lost after leading by a set and a break to Chloe Paquet, while Veronika Erjavec upset No. 2 seed Diane Parry.

Despite losing in the singles semifinal, Maja Chwalinska won the doubles title with Anastasia Detiuc. They defeated Jesika Maleckova and Miriam Skoch in the final. This is their second title as a team, and their first at the WTA 125 level. For Chwalinska, it`s her third WTA 125 doubles title, and for Detiuc, it`s her second.
