Thomas Partey Leaning Towards New Arsenal Contract Amid Transfer Interest

Football news

Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey reportedly prefers to extend his contract at Arsenal rather than pursue interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia or Spain. While he was initially expected to leave the Emirates Stadium when his current deal expires this summer, manager Mikel Arteta recently hinted that Arsenal is open to offering an extension to the player, who will turn 32 in June.

Partey has also attracted attention from Saudi Arabian teams, Italian club Juventus, and Barcelona. His former club, Atletico Madrid, whom he left for Arsenal in 2020, is also understood to be interested in re-signing him. Despite facing injury setbacks during his time in London, Partey has recently shown some of his best form, which is believed to have initiated new discussions about his future at the club.

However, despite Partey`s preference to remain, committing to an extension is not yet guaranteed. Arsenal is reportedly seeking terms that would secure his presence for the next season, potentially with an option for an additional 12 months. While Partey has not dismissed this possibility, the terms of the salary are a major factor. He is currently among the highest earners at the Emirates, with a weekly wage exceeding $250,000, and reports suggest the Gunners are looking for a lower base salary in a new agreement.

Furthermore, Partey`s role in the first team could potentially diminish. Arsenal remains optimistic about signing Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, having worked on facilitating the Spanish international`s arrival throughout the season. Although Real Madrid has also been linked with Zubimendi, Arsenal is reportedly confident in completing the transfer.

When questioned last week about the progress of Partey`s contract talks, Arteta commented, “There is progress with all the players. I`ll leave that to the sporting director and the club to decide and to talk about.”

With the potential arrival of Zubimendi and the possibility of Partey staying, fellow defensive midfielder Jorginho is anticipated to leave when his contract expires. The Italian international has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia but is believed to favor clubs in Brazil, with Flamengo frequently mentioned. A rib injury currently threatens to impact the remainder of the season for the 33-year-old, who has earned considerable respect at Arsenal for his influence both on and off the pitch.
