World number two Iga Swiatek revealed she was understandably disappointed after her significant 6-1, 6-1 defeat to Coco Gauff in the Madrid Open semifinal last week. However, speaking on Tuesday, she clarified that the extensive speculation that followed on social media regarding her future plans was highly inaccurate. Swiatek firmly insisted that she had not seriously considered cancelling her upcoming grass-court season.
Addressing the media at the Internazionali d’Italia tournament, Swiatek stated, “In the past few days, I’ve seen millions of comments that were simply untrue. Especially within the Polish media, there are so many theories circulating about me right now that have no basis in reality.”
Swiatek acknowledged her prominent status as a four-time Roland Garros champion and the current World No. 2, understanding the media`s role.
“You [media] enjoy creating articles that grab people’s attention – I understand that,” Swiatek said. “It’s part of the job.”
She left no room for doubt regarding her participation in the grass-court Grand Slam.
“But yes, I am definitely not going to skip Wimbledon. I genuinely want to improve my game on grass. Every year is another chance to do that. I will absolutely play Wimbledon, provided I don’t sustain an injury.”
Swiatek`s track record at Wimbledon (11 wins, 5 losses, a .688 winning percentage) is less dominant compared to her results at the other three major tournaments: Roland Garros (35-2, .946), the US Open (20-5, .800), and the Australian Open (22-7, .759). Interestingly, her only junior singles Grand Slam title was won at Wimbledon back in 2018.
