Svitolina Victorious in Rouen, Ending Title Drought

Sports News

Elina Svitolina, the top-ranked player in the tournament, celebrated her first championship in almost two years on Sunday, taking home the trophy at the WTA 250 Open Capfinances Rouen Métropole.

Svitolina of Ukraine, seeded No. 1, defeated No. 3 seed Olga Danilovic from Serbia in the Rouen final. The match lasted one hour and 58 minutes on the indoor clay courts of Rouen, France, with Svitolina winning 6-4, 7-6(8) in a hard-fought contest.

In a tense conclusion to the second set, Svitolina fought off two set points while trailing 6-4 in the tiebreak. She then seized her fourth match point to secure the victory.

This win improves Svitolina`s impressive performance in WTA singles finals. The former World No. 3 has now participated in 22 tour-level finals throughout her career, winning 18 of them.

Back to winning ways: Svitolina previously won the Strasbourg title in May 2023, shortly after returning from maternity leave. However, she had not won another title until this week`s Rouen victory.

Since Strasbourg, Svitolina reached only one final, finishing as runner-up in Auckland in January 2024. In that final, she was narrowly defeated by Coco Gauff in three sets.

But in her debut at the Rouen tournament, Svitolina played exceptionally well, winning the title without losing a single set throughout the week. Notably, seven of her 18 titles have been won on clay courts.
