Serena Williams` late-night tweet on X before the Met Gala hinted at drama: “And one meltdown later,” she posted, “we are finally on the way to the Met Gala.”
The specific cause of the “meltdown” was never disclosed – the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion is also a mother of two – but fashion critics unanimously agreed that the final result was well worth any pre-event stress.
Williams, now 43, made a striking fashion statement at the Metropolitan Museum of Art`s annual fashion event in New York City. She arrived on the blue carpet in an icy, pale-blue custom gown featuring a daringly sheer panel on the leg, complemented by a satin, silver cape resembling a duvet. This marked her seventh appearance at the Met Gala, for which she collaborated with the Italian luxury brand Moncler.
The ensemble was a custom design created by former British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, who accompanied Williams to the event. The dress boasted a fitted silhouette with an elegant off-the-shoulder neckline. The long skirt incorporated a sheer abstract panel woven with fine metallic threads, giving it a shimmering quality. A long, light blue cape in Moncler’s signature puffer style completed the look, draped artistically around Williams` wrists.
Williams styled her look with a very chic golden bob haircut, featuring 1920s-inspired finger waves, expertly done by Angela Meadows. Her accessories included exquisite Fred Leighton angel wing earrings adorned with diamond drops, along with a matching barrette, bracelet, and rings.
Williams commented that the stunning transformation made her feel like a modern-day Cinderella.
Later, she shared her favorite moments from the night with her followers.
“The highlight of my night, obviously, was Rihanna. It’s no secret that I love her. She’s so gorgeous — literally like the most gorgeous. I’m obsessed with her.
“And also, Pharrell telling me, ‘Stop caring what people say.’”
