The Women`s Tennis Association (WTA) has revealed that Sao Paulo is set to host a tournament on the Hologic WTA Tour this September, marking its return after a quarter-century absence. Scheduled for the week of September 8, the new WTA 250 event, named the SP Open, will be held outdoors on hard courts. It will feature a main draw of 32 players for singles and 16 teams for doubles, taking the place of the Jasmin Open previously held in Monastir.
Sao Paulo`s last appearance on the WTA calendar was in 2000 with the Brasil Open. In that event, Hungary`s Rita Kuti-Kis claimed the singles title, while Argentina`s Laura Montalvo and Paola Suarez took home the doubles championship.
This news about Sao Paulo follows a dynamic start to the 2025 WTA season. So far, 15 different players have won singles titles across the WTA 250, 500, and 1000 categories. A notable highlight was Mirra Andreeva becoming the youngest champion ever at a WTA 1000 event.
The engaging matches early in the season and the introduction of the WTA`s new brand identity have contributed to significant growth on social media. By the end of March, WTA followers had increased by 25% compared to the previous year, and total video views surged by 163% in the first quarter.
