Sports News

A year following their memorable Mutua Madrid Open final, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek are once again at the forefront, heading the entry list for this year`s tournament. Their previous encounter in Madrid was a highlight of the 2024 season, a captivating match lasting 3 hours and 11 minutes where Swiatek narrowly defeated Sabalenka 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(7).

Will we see a repeat of this high-stakes clash in 2025? The world`s top two players are confirmed participants, leading the tournament`s entry list. Since their thrilling Madrid final, both Swiatek and Sabalenka have added major titles to their names – Swiatek won at Roland Garros, and Sabalenka triumphed at the US Open. They faced each other twice more in 2024, with Swiatek winning in Rome and Sabalenka avenging her Madrid loss in Cincinnati. These matches bring their head-to-head count to 12 encounters, and they have not competed against each other since.

Swiatek and Sabalenka, champions of Madrid in 2021 and 2023 respectively, will be joined in the main draw by two other past winners: Petra Kvitova, a three-time champion, and Ons Jabeur, who secured her first WTA 1000 title here in 2022. Adding to the star power, eleven more Grand Slam champions are set to compete, bringing the total count to fifteen. These include Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, Elena Rybakina, Barbora Krejcikova, Jelena Ostapenko, Victoria Azarenka, Marketa Vondrousova, Emma Raducanu, Naomi Osaka, and Bianca Andreescu.

The entire Top 72 players from the PIF WTA Rankings as of March 17 have signed up for the Madrid main draw.
