Roland Garros 2025: Will Swiatek Remain Champion in Paris?

Sports News

Iga Swiatek, the world`s second-ranked player and current Roland Garros champion, is set to compete for her fifth title at the French Open next month. All of the top 100 players in the WTA rankings are expected to participate in this major clay-court tournament.

The official player list for the second Grand Slam of the year was released on Tuesday. Swiatek will face strong competition from players hoping to take her crown, including Aryna Sabalenka, the world`s number one player, Coco Gauff, a former finalist ranked at number 4, Jasmine Paolini, last year`s runner-up and ranked number 6, and Mirra Andreeva, ranked number 7, who made a name for herself last year by becoming the youngest Roland Garros semifinalist in 27 years.

The tournament field also includes four players entering with protected rankings. Petra Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon champion and two-time Roland Garros semifinalist, is a notable entrant. She is planning to play her first Grand Slam since the 2023 US Open after having a baby son last July. Other players using protected rankings to enter are Sorana Cirstea, a former Roland Garros quarterfinalist, Jodie Burrage, and Yanina Wickmayer.

Burrage, using a special ranking of No. 85, is anticipated to make her first appearance in the main draw at Roland Garros.

Alexandra Eala from the Philippines is also expected to make her Paris debut. After reaching her first WTA 1000 semifinal at the Miami Open last month, she has directly qualified for the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time. Other first-time direct entrants include Australian 18-year-old Maya Joint, the second youngest player in the Top 100 after Mirra Andreeva, and Colombian No. 2 Emiliana Arango, who broke into the Top 100 this year after reaching her first WTA 500 final in Mexico.

Currently, Robin Montgomery, ranked No. 100 in the world, is the last player to gain direct entry into the main draw.

The first 15 alternates for the main draw, in case of player withdrawals, are listed as:

  1. Yuan Yue
  2. Taylor Townsend
  3. Yuliia Starodubtseva
  4. Aoi Ito
  5. Wang Yafan
  6. Kaja Juvan (using a special ranking of No. 105)
  7. Rebecca Marino
  8. Anastasia Zakharova
  9. Leolia Jeanjean
  10. Solana Sierra
  11. Harriet Dart
  12. Aliaksandra Sasnovich
  13. Mananchaya Sawangkaew
  14. Nuria Parrizas Diaz
  15. Petra Martic

To complete the main draw, eight wild card entries will be announced later. The Roland Garros tournament will begin on May 25 and continue until June 8.
