Power Outage Halts Play at Madrid Open

Sports News

All matches scheduled for the remainder of Monday at the Mutua Madrid Open were cancelled following a significant power disruption.

Play was unexpectedly halted at the tournament site due to a widespread power outage. Media reported the extensive power failure affected not only Spain but much of Europe, impacting millions. The cause was initially unclear, with early reports suggesting problems with the European electric grid.

Before the blackout occurred after noon, two of the scheduled eight women`s fourth-round matches had concluded.

In these completed matches, No. 4 seed Coco Gauff defeated Belinda Bencic 6-4, 6-2, and No. 7 seed Mirra Andreeva won against qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva with a score of 6-1, 6-4.

World No. 2 Iga Swiatek was observed in the darkened players` lounge with her team, awaiting the resumption of the suspended men`s match between Grigor Dimitrov and qualifier Jacob Fearnley on Manolo Santana Stadium.
