Pochettino Reacts to USMNT’s Panama Loss, Looks Ahead to Canada Match

Football news

INGLEWOOD, California – U.S. men`s national team coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed disappointment after Thursday`s 1-0 defeat to Panama in the Concacaf Nations League semifinal. He stated that the performance did not reflect the team`s true capabilities, including star player Christian Pulisic.

The USMNT, usually dominant in the CNL, struggled in the first half, which Pochettino described as “painful.” Despite controlling possession and taking numerous shots, they created few clear scoring opportunities against a defensive Panama team. Pulisic, in particular, had a quiet game, managing only one shot.

Pochettino acknowledged the pressure Pulisic has been under recently, suggesting it might have affected his performance. “It`s not an excuse, but a player like him is under pressure,” Pochettino said. He emphasized that this wasn`t the best version of Pulisic and that he expects more. However, Pochettino remains confident in Pulisic`s readiness for the World Cup, stating, “…no doubt Christian is going to be ready and is going to be at his best…for us.”

Pochettino reiterated that the Panama game was not indicative of his desired playing style or the team`s potential under his leadership. “I think we expect more from everyone, from all the players. I think our expectation is so high,” he stated. He emphasized the need for improvement, saying the game didn`t represent the team`s true identity.

The coach also pointed to a lack of team chemistry as a contributing factor to the loss. He fielded a somewhat experimental lineup due to injuries, with players like Yunus Musah and Timothy Weah in unfamiliar wingback roles, and Tanner Tessman making a rare start in midfield. Josh Sargent led the attack in the absence of other forwards.

“That chemistry, I didn`t see that chemistry,” Pochettino admitted. He questioned his own role in team selection and indicated potential lineup changes for the upcoming match against Canada. He noted that Canada would present a different tactical challenge compared to Panama`s defensive approach.

Despite the loss, Pochettino believes the USMNT deserved to win against Panama. He highlighted their dominance in the game but lamented the lack of scoring. “The discipline was there. The game plan, I think they followed the game plan. They tried to do everything. I cannot complain about not trying – they tried,” he said. He stressed the need for greater aggression and competitiveness.

Pochettino is prioritizing the team`s competitive edge during his early tenure, recognizing the lack of intensity against Panama. He views the Canada game as crucial for assessing the team`s response and character. “It`s not only about the result but it`s only about improving our performance,” he concluded.
