Top-seeded Jessica Pegula showcased remarkable resilience in the Charleston Open final, overcoming a second-set deficit to defeat fellow American Sofia Kenin 6-3, 7-5 on Sunday and claim the Credit One Charleston Open title.
The first all-American final in Charleston in two decades appeared destined for a third set as Sofia Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion, established a commanding 5-1 lead in the second set after losing the first. In a critical moment, Kenin held three set points while returning serve but couldn`t convert any. This missed opportunity allowed Pegula to seize control, winning six consecutive games and securing her second title of the season, following her WTA 250 victory in Austin last month.
Pegula also demonstrated her ability to turn the tide in the first set, recovering from a 0-2 start to win four straight games against Kenin, who had initially taken the lead.
“I realized how tired I was,” Pegula admitted to Tennis Channel in a post-match interview. “Sofia elevated her game, and there were a couple of games where I couldn`t break through or hold serve effectively. The windy and challenging conditions meant that losing focus even momentarily could shift the momentum rapidly. It was equally tough for both of us.”
Reflecting on her comeback, Pegula added, “In the second set, my focus was simply on holding serve and building momentum for a potential third set, as starting a third set from behind is never ideal. I knew I had the capability to break her serve. While I didn`t anticipate breaking her twice, fortunately, I managed to play some strong tennis.”
Jessica Pegula`s recent form has been exceptional, winning 17 of her last 19 matches. Her five victories this week contribute to a season total of 25 wins, currently leading the Hologic WTA Tour. She is set to overtake Coco Gauff as the No. 1 ranked American player and achieve a career-high World No. 3 ranking on Monday.
