Slovak tennis player Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, an Olympic semifinalist, has announced she is pregnant.
The former world No. 26 and winner of three WTA Tour titles hasn`t played since her loss to Varvara Gracheva in Doha qualifying in February.
Last week, the Slovakian player shared the news on Instagram. She explained that her absence from tournaments and the BJKC team in April was due to her pregnancy. “Hello, I just wanted to let you know that the reason I haven`t been playing tournaments or been part of the BJKC team in April is because of my pregnancy,” Schmiedlova wrote. “It`s a personal matter for me, but I wanted to share this to avoid any confusion in the coming months. My partner and I are very happy and excited.”
Her partner is fellow Slovakian tennis player Lukas Klein, currently ranked No. 173 on the ATP tour.
The 30-year-old has won three WTA titles in her career (Katowice 2015, Bucharest 2015, and Bogota 2018) and reached the fourth round of Roland Garros in 2023. However, her most memorable achievements came while representing Slovakia. Notably, she earned all three of her career wins against Top 10 opponents at the Olympics, including surprising victories over Jasmine Paolini and Barbora Krejcikova en route to the semifinals in Paris last summer. She also played a crucial role for Slovakia`s Billie Jean King Cup team, helping them reach the final for the second time in history last year.
