Madrid Open Round of 16 results: Matchups, key outcomes and who advanced

Sports News

Monday was set to be a significant day at the Mutua Madrid Open, but a widespread power outage affecting parts of Spain, Portugal, and southern France caused a disruption. Six of the scheduled Round of 16 matches were suspended. Only two managed to conclude on Monday: Coco Gauff defeated Belinda Bencic, and Mirra Andreeva secured a win over Yuliia Starodubtseva.

The six remaining matches were successfully started and completed on Tuesday. This included top-seeded players Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, both of whom advanced to the quarterfinals. Tuesday`s play delivered a full schedule, bringing the Round of 16 to a close despite the unusual delay caused by the power interruption.

No. 4 Coco Gauff def. Belinda Bencic 6-4, 6-2

With this victory, Gauff has now reached the quarterfinals at every current WTA 1000 event, with the exception of her home tournament in Miami.

No. 7 Mirra Andreeva def. Yuliia Starodubtseva

Following her win on Monday, the Madrid Open became the first tournament where Andreeva has achieved 10 career match wins at a single WTA event.

No. 2 Iga Swiatek def. No. 13 Diana Shnaider 6-0, 6-7 (3), 6-4

Swiatek has now extended her streak to 17 consecutive clay-court quarterfinals. This impressive run dates back to her third-round loss to Ashleigh Barty at Madrid four years ago.

No. 5 Madison Keys def. No. 19 Donna Vekic 6-2, 6-3

Keys is now the second American player to record 25 or more WTA-1000 match wins on clay, joining Serena Williams (44).

No. 17 Elina Svitolina def. Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-4

Prior to this season, Svitolina had not won consecutive matches at the Madrid Open in her nine previous appearances.

Moyuka Uchijima def. No. 21 Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 7-6 (5)

In the past two weeks (Rouen and Madrid), Uchijima has made more WTA quarterfinal appearances than in her entire career leading up to this period (her only previous quarterfinal was in Monastir in 2022).

No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka def. Peyton Stearns 6-2, 6-4

Sabalenka`s win on Tuesday marked her 28th victory of the season, placing her in the lead for most match wins on the tour, one ahead of Jessica Pegula.

No. 24 Marta Kostyuk def Anastasia Potapova 6-3, 6-2

Kostyuk has already accumulated 11 WTA 1000 wins in 2025, which is her highest total for a single season at this level.
