Madrid Open Round of 16: Match Results and Tuesday Schedule

Sports News

The Round of 16 at the Mutua Madrid Open on Monday, expected to be a highlight of the tournament, was interrupted by a widespread power outage affecting Spain, Portugal, and southern France. This disruption led to the suspension of six matches. Only two matches were finished on Monday before play halted.

Completed Matches (Monday)

No. 4 Coco Gauff defeated Belinda Bencic 6-4, 6-2.

This victory sends Gauff to her first quarterfinal appearance at the Madrid Open. With this result, Gauff has now reached the quarterfinals at every current WTA 1000 event except her home tournament in Miami.

No. 7 Mirra Andreeva defeated Yuliia Starodubtseva.

Monday`s win marked a milestone for Andreeva, as the Madrid Open became the first tournament where she has recorded 10 career wins at a single WTA event.

The six suspended matches resumed and were completed on Tuesday.

Completed Matches (Tuesday)

No. 2 Iga Swiatek defeated No. 13 Diana Shnaider 6-0, 6-7 (3), 6-4.

Swiatek`s hard-fought victory extends her remarkable streak of reaching 17 consecutive clay-court quarterfinals. This impressive run dates back to her third-round loss at the Madrid Open four years ago.

No. 5 Madison Keys defeated No. 19 Donna Vekic 6-2, 6-3.

With this win, Keys becomes only the second American player, joining Serena Williams (44 wins), to achieve 25 or more match victories at WTA 1000 events held on clay courts.

No. 17 Elina Svitolina defeated Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-4.

Svitolina has reached her first quarterfinal in Madrid. Notably, before this season, she had never won consecutive matches in her nine previous appearances at the Madrid Open. This victory marks her eighth straight win overall.

Qualifier Moyuka Uchijima defeated No. 21 Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 7-6 (5).

Uchijima continued her impressive form. She has now reached more WTA quarterfinal appearances in the last two weeks (at Rouen and Madrid) than in her entire career prior to this successful run (her only previous quarterfinal was in Monastir in 2022). This is her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal.
