Lionel Messi`s future seems to be with Inter Miami. Club co-owner Jorge Mas mentioned in an interview that discussions are underway regarding the Argentine superstar`s future with the team.
Considered one of the greatest players of all time, Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 after leaving PSG and his legendary stint with FC Barcelona, where he won numerous titles. The Argentine icon, who led his country to World Cup victory in 2022, has made a significant impact in MLS, scoring 40 goals in 47 matches and guiding the team to win the Leagues Cup in 2023 and the MLS Supporters` Shield in 2024.
His current contract is set to expire after this season, but Inter Miami anticipates Messi being a part of the team when they open their new stadium in 2026.
“My expectation is to see Lionel Messi, our captain and number 10, in the new stadium. It`s a decision we`re discussing with him about his future at the club,” Mas stated in an interview.
“Everything is pointing towards a bright future for both the club and Lionel. It ultimately depends on him, but we expect to finalize plans in the next two to three months as it`s crucial to plan ahead.”
“After his playing career, he will remain involved with the club as a shareholder, aiming to leave a lasting legacy for his children. We have a very good and respectful relationship with him, allowing him to enjoy his time here.”
While there`s always been speculation about Messi potentially returning to his childhood club Newell`s in Argentina, extending his stay with Miami would likely reduce the chances of that happening. Turning 38 this June, remaining in the United States until 2026 aligns well, as the country will co-host the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada.
With Argentina aiming to defend their World Cup title, staying in the United States offers numerous advantages for Messi. The Argentine national team frequently uses Miami as their base for competitions in the region, and the Argentina Football Association established an office in Miami in 2023.
