Krueger Defeats Fernandez; Paolini Advances After Jabeur Retirement in Miami

Sports News

In Miami, Ashlyn Krueger delivered a standout performance at the Miami Open, while Jasmine Paolini smoothly progressed as one of the tour`s most consistent players.

Ashlyn Krueger has reached the Round of 16 after winning against Leylah Fernandez with scores of 6-1, 7-5. Her next opponent will be the winner of the match between No. 9 seed Zheng Qinwen and Taylor Townsend.

The 20-year-old American has now achieved her best result in a WTA 1000 tournament, matching her performance in Toronto last year. Krueger has also secured her seventh victory against Top 30 players this year, surpassing her total from previous seasons. Only Madison Keys, Mirra Andreeva, and Iga Swiatek have more wins against top players.

Krueger`s powerful shots were evident in the match against Fernandez. She maintained a strong serve, not allowing Fernandez to break it. Among players, only McCartney Kessler (84) and Hailey Baptiste (78) have hit more winners than Krueger`s current count of 69.

Paolini Advances

Earlier in the day, Jasmine Paolini, seeded No. 6, advanced to the Round of 16. This happened when Ons Jabeur, trailing 4-3 in the first set, had to retire due to a left leg injury.

“She’s such a great person, and it’s upsetting to see her injured on the court,” Paolini commented afterwards. “I hope she recovers quickly.”

This victory marks Paolini’s first win against a Top 30 player after five consecutive defeats. Last year was a breakthrough year for the Italian player, reaching the finals at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon. While last year`s success felt like a surprise, this year she has different expectations.

“In Miami, it is,” she said with a laugh. “I’m happy to reach the fourth round – I’ve never won two matches here before.”

The next round could be a significant challenge. Paolini is set to play the winner of the match between Naomi Osaka and Hailey Baptiste on Monday.

If she faces Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam singles champion, Paolini is prepared for a tough match, even though they have never played or practiced together.

“I anticipate a fast-paced match,” Paolini stated. “I expect powerful serves, returns, and shots. I need to stay focused every point, playing consistently and solidly. It won`t be easy because she plays with such speed.”
