Josh Emmett is set to return to the UFC octagon in a main event clash against Lerone Murphy.
They will face off at UFC Fight Night: Emmett vs Murphy on April 6th, in a fight that could pave the way for a Featherweight title shot against Ilia Topuria.
Emmett`s comeback follows a 16-month hiatus since his last fight, where he secured a first-round knockout victory over Bryce Mitchell at UFC 296 in December 2023.
While such a long break could potentially lead to ring rust, Lerone Murphy might be more concerned about the reason behind Emmett`s time away, especially considering Emmett`s reputation as a powerful puncher.

Josh Emmett Admits to Fighting Below His Best Before Break
Emmett explained that his extended time away from fighting since 2023 was necessary because he felt he wasn`t performing at his peak. He stated that this period of recovery was crucial to get back to his optimal condition, a fact that Murphy will undoubtedly be aware of.
Speaking at the UFC Fight Night: Emmett vs Murphy media day, Emmett said:
“I could have fought sooner, but I felt it was important for myself, my coaches, my family, fans, and the UFC. For the past few years, I haven`t been fighting at my best.”
“I`ve been competing at a fraction of my full potential. So, I needed to focus on myself and get back to 100 percent. Now, I`m training and fighting like I used to. You`re going to witness something special on Saturday night.”
“I know the difference between feeling 100 percent and feeling 30 percent, which is how I`ve been fighting against top-level opponents for the last few years.”
“Yes, there are fights I wish I could redo. But right now, my priority is getting past Lerone Murphy.”
Emmett`s current record stands at 19 wins and 4 losses in the UFC. If he believes he has been performing at only 30%, his opponents should be wary of what he can achieve at full strength.
Lerone Murphy Aims for Title Shot with Victory Over Josh Emmett
While acknowledging the challenge posed by a rested Emmett, Murphy expresses confidence in his own abilities for the upcoming fight.
In an interview, he mentioned that a win in this fight is essential for securing a title shot. If Murphy maintains his undefeated record, he could follow in Topuria`s footsteps and become the Featherweight champion.
“Obviously, with a win, I will definitely be asking for a title shot,” Murphy stated.
“Ilia Topuria achieved it, and I`ll be 16-0. So, if I go out there, deliver a strong performance, and demonstrate championship caliber, I believe the UFC will grant me the opportunity.”
“The Miracle” Murphy is currently undefeated in his UFC career, with 15 wins and 1 draw out of 16 fights. Riding a 7-fight win streak, he is feeling confident heading into his match against Emmett on April 6th.
