Israel Adesanya’s Coach Suggests He Mirror Alexander Volkanovski After UFC Talks

MMA news

Alexander Volkanovski achieved a feat at UFC 314 similar to his teammate and friend.

After suffering consecutive knockout defeats, questions arose about Volkanovski`s ability to regain his top position in the sport.

However, “The Great” silenced his critics with a victory over Diego Lopes on April 12, claiming the vacant featherweight title in a thrilling match in Miami.

Israel Adesanya also experienced title reclamation in Florida, knocking out Alex Pereira in their rematch two years prior to become a two-time middleweight champion.

Adesanya, currently on a three-fight winless streak, may be considering another comeback attempt at the age of 35.

Eugene Bareman Believes Alexander Volkanovski Has Set a Path for Israel Adesanya

Alexander Volkanovski himself acknowledged the validity of doubts before UFC 314, recognizing the challenge ahead.

While Israel Adesanya might not immediately contend for a title upon his return, his next fight will likely be scrutinized, with fans questioning his ability to compete against top middleweights.

Eugene Bareman, Adesanya`s coach, recently mentioned in a Submission Radio interview that Adesanya is considering a return to the Octagon, though it`s still early in discussions.

“It`s not at the forefront of my thoughts. Israel is currently on a break in America. In a brief conversation after Volk`s fight, he mentioned, `I think I`m going to fight again.` That`s the extent of our discussions,” Bareman shared.

Bareman emphasizes that if Adesanya is serious about a comeback, he needs to match the standard set by Volkanovski.

The City Kickboxing coach has previously stressed Adesanya`s need for complete dedication during training camps to compete at the highest level.

Bareman regards Volkanovski as the most dedicated athlete he knows, stating that Volkanovski has demonstrated the necessary work ethic for Adesanya to follow if he aims to get back on track.

“Izzy understands the required commitment in this sport. We just watched our close friend, who is around the same age or even older, win a world championship. We both know firsthand how diligently he works. Age is irrelevant with that level of dedication… Volkanovski`s work ethic is the benchmark.

“That’s the level we need to reach, and Izzy is aware of the immense commitment required. Dedication akin to Volk`s is a significant undertaking for any fighter, especially one later in their career. These are the considerations Izzy is currently weighing.”

Potential Opponents for Israel Adesanya`s Next Fight

Following a loss to Nassourdine Imavov in February, a relatively new contender in the middleweight division, it might be risky for Israel Adesanya to immediately face another rising star.

However, the UFC has a history of creating such matchups, where Adesanya can prove his continued relevance, or his opponent can secure a career-defining victory.

Possible opponents include Caio Borralho and Anthony Hernandez, while a rematch with Sean Strickland could also be considered.

Adesanya would likely seek to avenge his previous loss to Strickland, and after Strickland`s defeat to Dricus du Plessis, a second win over Adesanya could revitalize his momentum.
