Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s MMA Skills Praised by Ex-Champ

MMA news

According to a former two-division world champion, Dwayne Johnson`s MMA training for his upcoming movie was effective.

The wrestling icon, known as ‘The Rock’, is preparing to play Mark Kerr in “The Smashing Machine,” a film about the former UFC fighter`s battles with painkiller addiction during his MMA career.

To prepare for this demanding role, Dwayne Johnson immersed himself in MMA training.

The 52-year-old shared his training progress on social media, appearing impressive to casual observers. But did his efforts gain the respect of a seasoned MMA expert?

Former Champion Certifies Dwayne Johnson`s MMA Abilities

“The Smashing Machine” movie will feature appearances from figures in the fight world, including boxing star Oleksandr Usyk as Igor Vovchanchyn, Kerr`s past opponent.

Ryan Bader, former Bellator heavyweight and light heavyweight champion, will also play a significant role, portraying UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman in the film expected later this year.

Bader`s extensive 40-fight career includes bouts against MMA legends like Jon Jones, Fedor Emelianenko, and Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson, making him exceptionally qualified to judge Johnson`s MMA skills.

“Yeah, he looked good,” Bader commented on ‘The Rock’ in a Submission Radio interview.

“I’m not saying he looked like a 20-year MMA veteran, but he clearly trained hard. He engaged in a real MMA training camp to develop credible skills for the movie.”

“From the clips I’ve seen, it looks convincing. He dedicated himself and is in fantastic shape, as always. He’s a massive guy.”

Ryan Bader`s Future Plans

Bader doesn`t seem to be pursuing acting after working with Johnson. His current focus is on concluding his MMA career successfully.

Bader is returning to free agency after leaving PFL. He last fought in February 2024, suffering a quick knockout loss to Renan Ferreira.

Ideally, he aims to return to the UFC, where he initially gained recognition in 2008.

“My manager and I have discussed the idea of a UFC return to complete the circle and possibly retire there,” Bader mentioned.

“Even just one fight would be great. I`m unsure if the UFC is interested, but we`ve considered it a cool possibility.”
