MMA legend Demetrious Johnson had a touching conversation with street fighter `Death Sentence` following his first victory, a win that Johnson helped him achieve through coaching.
Known as one of the greatest mixed martial artists ever, the former flyweight world champion and ONE FC titleholder retired last year. Since then, he`s become popular on YouTube for his coverage of unconventional fights.
In a recent series on his channel, Johnson invited Maraji Johnson, also known by his alias `Death Sentence`, to train for an upcoming Streetbeefs bout. `Death Sentence`, a humorous online figure often seen as inexperienced in fighting but claiming elite status, secured his first win last weekend.
Johnson`s Reaction to `Death Sentence`s` Maiden Victory
Demetrious Johnson couldn`t attend the Streetbeefs event in Virginia at the end of their training period, receiving updates about the fight via a Facetime call.
Johnson was thrilled to discover `Death Sentence` had won, utilizing grappling techniques they practiced. His opponent, `Illuminate the State`, contested the result, citing a punch to the back of the head, but reportedly declined to continue after a warning.
Watching via phone, Johnson connected with `Death Sentence` immediately after the fight. “You are a warrior, young Mr Death,” Johnson said humorously as `Death Sentence` excitedly announced his win and ambitiously declared he was ready for the UFC.
Johnson advised caution, saying, “Let`s take baby steps.” He then asked who `Death Sentence` wanted to face next after defeating `Death Penalty`, prompting the fighter to name `Lights Out` and several other less clear opponents.
When `Death Sentence` credited the win solely to his coach, Johnson responded, “Congratulations on your first win. We just helped you and taught you how to train effectively.” He added, “I look forward to seeing what you do next, so stay focused and keep training. The next step is July.”
Training with `Mighty Mouse` Paved the Way for First Win
Despite being a popular figure on the Streetbeefs YouTube channel (which boasts 4.27 million subscribers), `Death Sentence` had not won a fight until he received guidance from one of MMA`s all-time greats for his recent match.
Johnson spent time training with the backyard fighting personality, documenting it in videos on his channel. They also appeared together on an episode of Johnson`s `Mightycast`, where he made a commitment to his viewers.
Johnson promised to train `Death Sentence` for his next fight if their `Mightycast` episode reached over 250,000 views. The video exceeded this target significantly, leading to their joint training sessions, including a notable comical sparring clip.
