Happy Friday! The UEFA Champions League quarterfinals wrapped up dramatically on Wednesday, and even though the competition is on hold, there`s still much excitement as teams chase European trophies in the final weeks. I`m Pardeep Cattry, bringing you the weekend update.

🇪🇺 Four Teams Remain

The UEFA Champions League semifinals are now set. Arsenal defeated the reigning champions Real Madrid with a decisive 5-1 aggregate victory, and Inter secured their spot in the final four with a 4-3 aggregate win over Bayern Munich.

Arsenal`s victory began turbulently when Thibaut Courtois saved Bukayo Saka`s penalty. A lengthy VAR check later in the first half reversed a penalty decision for Real Madrid. However, Arsenal managed the game effectively and scored late goals to secure the win. Saka compensated for his missed penalty by scoring the opening goal in the 66th minute. Vinicius Junior responded for Real Madrid a minute later, but it wasn`t enough for a team needing three more goals. Gabriel Martinelli`s goal in added time sealed Arsenal`s victory, marking their first Champions League semifinal appearance since 2009. James Benge notes that this win validates manager Mikel Arteta`s focus on team unity over individual brilliance, contrasting with Real Madrid`s approach.

Inter`s match against Bayern was closely contested until the end, but the Italian team reached their second semifinal in three years, reaffirming their potential to win the competition. Francesco Porzio writes that Inter`s continued European success under Simone Inzaghi since 2021 underscores his successful management, mirroring how Arsenal’s win reflects positively on Arteta.

In the Champions League semifinals, Arsenal will face Paris Saint-Germain, and Inter will play against Barcelona. The Europa League semifinals feature Tottenham Hotspur against Bodo/Glimt and Athletic Club versus Manchester United. In the Conference League, Chelsea will play Djurgarden, and Real Betis will face Fiorentina.

🏆 European Title Races Heat Up

With a few weeks remaining in the European season, title races are intensifying, especially for Champions League semifinalists Barcelona, Inter, and Paris Saint-Germain, who are still in contention for a treble.

PSG has already secured the French domestic title, becoming the first team in Europe`s top five leagues to do so this month. Liverpool could potentially join them as league champions this Sunday. The Reds hold a 13-point lead over second-place Arsenal with six games left, making their title win seem inevitable. Liverpool could mathematically clinch the title this weekend, though it`s unlikely as Arsenal would need to lose to relegation-threatened Ipswich Town for Liverpool to secure the title with a win against Leicester City.

In Spain and Germany, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are in strong positions to win their domestic titles. Barcelona leads Real Madrid by four points and is expected to maintain this lead against Celta Vigo on Saturday. Bayern Munich, with a six-point lead over Bayer Leverkusen, is likely to win against Heidenheim. While neither team will secure the title this weekend, both appear to be in control and need to perform well to fend off any challengers.

Italy`s title race remains the most competitive in Europe with six games remaining. Inter leads Napoli by just three points, making this weekend crucial. Napoli is expected to win against Monza easily, but Inter faces a tougher challenge against fifth-place Bologna, who have impressed under Vincenzo Italiano. This match follows Inter`s 2-2 Champions League draw with Bayern Munich and precedes their Coppa Italia semifinal second leg against AC Milan, with the aggregate score at 1-1. Inter manager Simone Inzaghi faces significant team selection decisions, balancing domestic and European ambitions in their treble pursuit.
