Colombia`s top player, Camila Osorio, reigned supreme on her home court, successfully defending her Copa Colsanitas Zurich title in Bogota on Sunday.
As the No. 2 seed, Osorio defeated Polish qualifier Katarzyna Kawa in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to claim her third Bogota title. She previously won the tournament in 2021 and 2023.
Osorio is now only the second player to win three or more singles titles in Bogota, moving closer to Fabiola Zuluaga`s record of four titles (1999, 2002, 2003, and 2004).
Osorio`s journey to the title was not without challenges. She faced a match point in her second-round match against American Emina Bektas but managed to recover and win after a grueling 2 hours and 31 minutes.
Following that close call, Osorio found her stride, winning her next two matches in straight sets against two-time champion Tatjana Maria in the quarterfinals and Julia Riera in the semifinals.
The final against Kawa was another straightforward victory for Osorio. She secured the first set with an ace and quickly established a double-break lead in the second set at 3-0.
Kawa fought back, utilizing her net skills to regain one break, but couldn`t level the score. A moment of drama occurred on Osorio`s third championship point when a double fault by Kawa was overruled after review. However, Osorio ultimately converted her fourth championship point after an hour and 23 minutes of play.
Osorio concluded the final with 22 winners compared to Kawa`s 14, and successfully converted five out of ten break points, securing another Bogota victory.
Despite her loss in the final, it was a successful week for 32-year-old Kawa, who reached her second WTA singles final nearly six years after her first. Kawa, who almost dropped out of the Top 300 last November, is now on the verge of returning to the Top 150.
The tournament also highlighted the impressive debut of 16-year-old American Julieta Pareja, who reached the semifinals in her first WTA main draw appearance before losing to Kawa. Pareja became the youngest WTA semifinalist since Coco Gauff at the 2019 Linz Open.
In doubles, Spaniards Cristina Bucsa and Sara Sorribes Tormo, the No. 1 seeds, won the Copa Colsanitas Zurich title. They defeated Brazil`s Laura Pigossi and Romania`s Irina Bara in a close final: 5-7, 6-2, [10-5].
This is the second title for Bucsa and Sorribes Tormo as a team, following their WTA 1000 Madrid victory last year. They also won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics last year.
This Bogota title marks the sixth WTA doubles title for both Cristina Bucsa and Sara Sorribes Tormo.
