Alex Pereira is aiming for a significantly different result in his potential rematch with Magomed Ankalaev, compared to their first encounter at UFC 313 in March.
After a dominant run in the UFC light heavyweight division, Pereira`s reign was abruptly halted by Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 313 in March.
Pereira Expected to Reclaim Title, Says Long-Time Rival
Despite immediate rematch discussions initiated by UFC President Dana White and Ankalaev`s expressed desire for an August fight, negotiations have reportedly stalled, according to Ankalaev`s recent updates.
It was revealed by Joe Rogan post-fight that Pereira competed with a broken hand and norovirus, suggesting his need for recovery time.
However, Artem Vakhitov, Pereira`s long-standing kickboxing rival, believes Pereira is likely to regain his title in their future bout.
“I believe Pereira was overly focused on defending takedowns, which hindered his offensive capabilities and knockout power,” Vakhitov stated in an exclusive interview.
“In the rematch, I anticipate a more open approach from him, and I doubt the fight will go the distance. Alex likely realized the takedown threat isn`t overwhelming, freeing him to perform at his best.”
“It’s hard to say definitively, but I lean towards yes, he will reclaim his title,” Vakhitov concluded.
Artem Vakhitov Still in UFC Contract Discussions
Vakhitov and Pereira have a history of two fights, each winning once. Following Vakhitov`s victory on Dana White’s Contender Series last year, a trilogy fight in the UFC seemed plausible.
However, Vakhitov apparently declined the UFC’s initial contract offer due to an unsatisfactory base salary.
Nevertheless, he disclosed that negotiations with the UFC are ongoing, leaving the possibility of his UFC debut still open.
