AC Milan`s newly appointed sporting director, Igli Tare, who joined the club this summer to initiate a new chapter, recently held discussions with the media regarding the ongoing transfer window. His appointment follows a disappointing season for the Italian side, where the Rossoneri failed to secure qualification for next season`s European competitions. The club has also welcomed back Massimiliano Allegri, who previously managed Milan from 2010 to 2014, leading them to a Serie A title in the 2010-11 season. Tare addressed various topics, including the situations of American international players Yunus Musah and Christian Pulisic.
Addressing the status of Yunus Musah, who is reportedly in talks to depart the club this summer, Tare clarified the reasons behind the potential move. He stated, “I consider Musah an excellent player, but we are seeking profiles with characteristics that align specifically with the project we are building alongside coach Allegri. Our focus is on recruiting deep-lying midfielders for our intended three-man midfield setup. Musah does not possess these particular attributes. While he is capable of playing in both two and three-man midfields, his profile differs from what we require for that specific role. This is the fundamental reason why we are looking to pursue alternative options.”
Tare also elaborated on other transfer priorities for the club. He mentioned, “We are looking at adding another midfielder, in addition to securing a striker. We also plan to sign both a right-back and a left-back. Should any player sales materialize, we will then aim to reinforce positions in the wide attacking areas and central defense. The primary goal is always to make the best decisions for the team to ensure we are competitive and can be protagonists in the upcoming season.”
In stark contrast to Musah`s likely departure, Christian Pulisic`s future at the club appears secure and central to Milan`s plans. Both Tare and coach Allegri view the American winger as a key figure for the team`s project. Tare confirmed, “Pulisic is expected to be a key player for the next season. Although I will discuss a potential contract renewal with club CEO Giorgio Furlani at the appropriate time, our immediate focus is entirely on the team`s preparation. I believe he was one of our most impactful players during the last season and is considered a pillar for the upcoming campaign; he holds a central and important role within this squad.”
Over his two seasons at AC Milan, Yunus Musah was utilized in various midfield roles, including central midfield, right-central midfield, and occasionally on the wing or even at right-back. While his versatility contributed to his 80 appearances for the club, it seemingly prevented him from establishing himself as a consistent starter or a key part of the regular lineup. Christian Pulisic, meanwhile, enjoyed a highly productive debut season, contributing 17 goals and 12 assists across 49 appearances in all competitions, solidifying his status as one of Milan`s top performers. However, with the United States preparing to co-host the 2026 World Cup, Pulisic`s situation of not competing in European club tournaments next season is perhaps not the ideal scenario for the American star as he builds towards the tournament.
